I am saddened by Rep. Murtha's comments (by Rep. Dennis Hastert)
I am saddened by the comments made today by Rep. Murtha. It is clear that as Nancy Pelosi’s top lieutenant on armed services, Rep. Murtha and Democratic leaders have adopted a policy of cut and run. They would prefer that the United States surrender to the terrorists who would harm innocent Americans. To add insult to injury, this is done while the President is on foreign soil.

Four years ago, America as we knew it changed. The terrorists attacked our people and attacked our nation. Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives. Families were destroyed, and our children lost their sense of peace. On that day, we learned that we no longer had a choice. Failure to act – and act strongly – left our nation vulnerable to Osama bin Laden and his band of terrorist followers.

But now, Rep. Murtha and other Democrats want us to retreat. They want us to wave the white flag of surrender to the terrorists of the world. It is unfortunate that this is all politics all the time. Continued below:

Leaving is best for Iraqi stability and freedom.
Say what you will about what is good for America; the best thing for Iraq is for the US military to leave ASAP. When the American military attempts civil administration, the results are usually disastrous. Contrary to the "nation building" we did so "successfully" in Germany and Japan, the only reason those nations succeeded as they did was that they managed to keep the US military administration from getting in the way too much- Germany was a mess until Ludwig Erhard stood up to Gen. Clay and fixed things. In Iraq, America has exported some of its worst domestic policies- gun control, gov. control of telecommunications, price controls on gas, and a strong central authority- all of which have failed miserably in the US. We have created a government which combines the worst elements of our own with the worst of Iraq's, and, rather than letting freedom grow, we have imposed it artificially. Iraq can only "get back to business" when we have left, and our well-meaning officials are gone.

This is the place for debate with an added element of friendly competition. This is a debating and essay resource and practice tool, not a debating society or club. There are no complicated rules, but these debates have structure. Each debate consists of a topic with two opposing views.

These are short essays limited to about 150-165 words. Present your strongest argument the first time, since you can't go back to change it--as with the National Forensic League and other speech and debate formats. Read these debates, then vote for your favorite arguments.

These debates are fun, informative and give exposure to all sides of the issues. Most debates will be archived (arguments that are obscene or offensive may be deleted). The better and more interesting debates will be featured.
