The nation should divide, literally, if necessary.

Recently a convention was held in the Vermont State House to discuss the possibility of secession from the United States. It is true that, in Texas v. White, the Supreme Court declared secession to be illegal, but if secession is legal, then the US Supreme Court had no jurisdiction in the matter anyway. Secession, and its lesser cousin, nullification, were once critical checks on the abuse of federal power. These are the most potent of the "checks and balances" we use to protect liberty. Since the illegal actions of 1861, the federal government has had the power to judge the extent of its own powers. This has been a recipe for tyranny, particularly since presidents like FDR bullied the allegedly "independent" judiciary. The States predate the federal government, so they should be able to rule on its power, not vice-versa.
