Don't ban it, just ease it up.

My opponent does not stand on a strong arguement because you can't say that some should be taken away just because "it sucks". Honestly, let's try and keep this one on an intelligent level. I don't believe that homework should be banned completely because if all work is done inside the classroom, that leaves hardly enough time for the teacher to actually teach the kids. I do think; however, that the level at which teachers do assign homework should be limited. At times teachers tend to give a lot of homework which often overwhelms the student outside of school & leaves very little time for extra-curricular activites, part-time jobs, or time spent with family. We should limit homework because too much may actually undercut teaching effectiveness & worsen disparities in student learning. Studies also show that students with more homework have a lower average in test scores as opposed to those with little homework who's test scores are higher. Homework shouldn't be banned, just limited.

Politicians make the argument that taxes suck so they should be cut so...
|
In stating my "Homework Sucks" argument I was basing it off the libertarian party (LP) platform regarding taxes. When you ask most students about whether or not they would prefer to do homework, most would say no as they can think of "better" things to do with their time. Similarily, the LP advocates that Americans have many "better" things to do with their money.
The LP says: "privatize and cut Taxes." In a similar vein I would tell teachers that students ought to be self responsible and determine for themselves how much studying they must do.
Secondly the LP says, "government has grown into a bloated conglomerate of political services that gets larger every year -- with no end in sight". Well, I think students feel the same way about homework. Under the logic of the LP, cut homework.
So yes, the argument "Homework sucks" so therefore it should be banned is a bit tongue in cheek, but I do think it has similar logic to the no tax argument that the LP promotes.
