There are benefits to being a divided nation
Right now America is bitterly divided. Any fool can see that. You will often hear voters and politicians saying have to "heal the divide" and "unite the nation."
But I believe a divided nation is good. In a divided nation, people are more interested in politics. If America wasn't divided, we would not have seen a 60% turnout last year. If people are more interested in politics then they are more sceptical about their politicians and therefore less likely to unquestioningly swallow their crap. In a divided nation, candidates can't win based entirely on their personality.
Think back a few years to when America was more united. People weren't interested in politics, turnout struggled to reach 50% and because people were less interested, it was much easier for politicians to pull the wool over peoples' eyes. Personality won election. Would Clinton have won had he been boring? Would Bush have won if he hadn't been a likeable guy?
Would you really like to go back to that kind of politics?

Nation Truly Divided Cannot Succeed
My counterargument is that the United States is not divided at least on the important things. There is a broad agreement on basic economic and political principles without which it's doubtful the country could function. A tolerance for those of different religious, ethnic or racial backgrounds is also critical (although improvement is needed). One need only look back to the American Civil War to see what a truly divided nation would mean. I cannot imagine anyone believing that level of discord can be considered "good." Americans have their differences within a broad context of common beliefs and that is understandable and does create interest. But a truly divided nation would be a disaster for any citizen wishing a better life for himself, his family and his fellow citizens.

This is the place for debate with an added element of friendly competition. This is a debating and essay resource and practice tool, not a debating society or club. There are no complicated rules, but these debates have structure. Each debate consists of a topic with two opposing views.

These are short essays limited to about 150-165 words. Present your strongest argument the first time, since you can't go back to change it--as with the National Forensic League and other speech and debate formats. Read these debates, then vote for your favorite arguments.

These debates are fun, informative and give exposure to all sides of the issues. Most debates will be archived (arguments that are obscene or offensive may be deleted). The better and more interesting debates will be featured.
