Base voting age on age of consent, youth sentencing or DMV requirements.

Yes, if we lower the voting age then how low should it go? As a civics teacher, I agree it should be lowered for several reasons. The primary one being that with the increase in federal & state standardized testing these days, American government classes are being pushed back to 10th and 11th grades (they used to be for 12th graders who would be voting soon and, therefore, the course was more relevant to them). Government is less relevant to a 10th grader (age 14-16) because they are not allowed to directly participate in the process they are learning about. Perhaps one SOLUTION would be to lower the age based on: 1) the age of consent and/or 2) the age a youth can be tried as an adult for most crimes and/or 3) the age a youth can get their 1st driver's license. As I understand it, in most states this would be 14 or 16 depending. Yes, turnout would be lower for the 14-18 or 16-18 demographic then it is already for 18-24s. But, at least, government would be more interesting to them!

We as goverment and society love to have as many rights as we can gain... No matter what they may be. But the real question is, do we deserve those rights? For instance, this lowering the voting age. In Iran, their voting age is 15, where are they at now?? also, you may be apart of our country and this election affects (effects?) you and you would like to have a say. But, its like saying can a 12 year old vote on school policies or health care cause it affects/effects them. What is the point in lowering the voting age if only a small amount of the teenagers would actually vote? in general, teenagers go along with what their parents opinions are and get convinced by slogans and advertising easily. They don't see the BIG piocture. The adult age is 18 for a specific reason. when you are 16 you are still depenedent upon other people. also, you have less responsibilities and are unknowlegable. a small amount of 16yo's can actually digest what the politicians are actually saying.
