Reform It, Not Abolish It
|
Any reform to Social Security should not change the indomitable rule of providing a guaranteed benefit. Conservatives are correct when they state that the original intention of Social Security was not to be the sole source of retirement income, but simply provide that same benefit, but they are wrong by wanting to replace this guarantee with a doubtful benefit, nebulous in how much it would provide.
A popular example the same conservatives use is the success of the Thrift Savings Plan for government employees, but what they neglect to mention if this same plan is an add-on to the guaranteed benefit of Social Security. If they truly wish to provide all Americans with this option then they would not remove the benefit, but simply offer another choice that may increase the benefit for retired Americans. The government should allow Americans the ability to increase their Social Security benefit, it is a restraint on liberty to not do so, but, it is reckless to remove the safety net.

Reform, then abolishment.

The problem with the Liberals is that they recognize that there is a problem, yet, they do not table any options or reforms of their own. Pointing out mistakes and not offering any constructive critisism will certainly cripple our goals of finding a proper solution. President Bush has offered a privitization of the system. This way of reform does not sound so bad when looking at the numbers in the stock market. Since the post-WWII era, the stock market has increased by at least 10% every decade (even in the market crisis of the mid 1980's) and there is no sign of this trend changing for any reason whatsoever. This country is a financial powerhouse because of our investment in our own businesses. Adding the Social Security tax to the market as a choise to the tax payer will certainly stimulate our economy greatly. However, even when this plan works, we must strive to eliminate this socialist entitlement. People must be responsible enough to protect their own futures.
