Opinion #1
Debater: Controversial

Eroding America's cherished civil liberties is worse than burning the flag
The real threat to America does not come from flag-burners. It comes from those who think a piece of cloth is more sacred than the cherished freedoms it represents. America was founded on the basis of civil liberties, and one of those liberties was freedom of speech, which is now coming under threat from those who have no understanding of the values of America's founding fathers.

And how often is the flag burned? It doesn't happen very often in America to say the least. The Republicans aren't concerned about people burning flags and desecrating the pride of America. They just want to make themselves look like the patriots and the Democrats look like America-haters. It's called grandstanding.

My opponent in this debate says that millions did not die so that the flag could be desecrated and America insulted. Well I believe that millions died to see a nation that would be founded on civil liberties. If they saw those civil liberties being eroded, I think that would insult them more.

Welcome to YouDebateIt.com
This is the place for debate with an added element of friendly competition. This is a debating and essay resource and practice tool, not a debating society or club. There are no complicated rules, but these debates have structure. Each debate consists of a topic with two opposing views.

These are short essays limited to about 150-165 words. Present your strongest argument the first time, since you can't go back to change it--as with the National Forensic League and other speech and debate formats. Read these debates, then vote for your favorite arguments.

These debates are fun, informative and give exposure to all sides of the issues. Most debates will be archived (arguments that are obscene or offensive may be deleted). The better and more interesting debates will be featured.
